From Network to Network: the meeting of two worlds
When in April 2007 I thought of creating a social network, DodoDada/Arte postale, dedicated to mail art and with a precise Italian connotation (we all know that English is the lingua franca of the web) the time was probably ripe, since within a few days both through direct invitations and word of mouth many mailartists had signed up and had began to actively participate in the life of this space dedicated to them, as is proved by memorable discussions and beautiful works.
Then as now, the intention of making mail art synergetic - the first global network established over fifty years ago and the web network that shuttled us in the twenty-first century - seems even more a winning choice, thanks to the spirit that dwells in all the networkers of this fabulous adventure that is mail art.
Thinking of DodoDada ...
When I try to visualize our social network, immediately the image of a small Italian square forms in my mind. Animated and colorful, perhaps with a little noise, produced by people who meet and greet, laugh, argue. Maybe they sit outside a bar to watch people strolling by and make (Italian) comments on current events: politics, football ... Gossip... Then you play billiards, cards... But they also make serious talk and then, when you meet a friend who asks you for help, you talk with the other friends and try to solve the problem with them... I mean, it’s like an extended family. I tried to visit other squares, some very large (metropolitan), but there are too many people, the noise becomes chaos. In other places, more similar to ours, the climate is more rigid, cold, perhaps due to the fact that “up north” they see very little sun...

Da Rete a Rete: l’incontro tra due mondi
Quando nell’aprile del 2007 pensai di creare un social network, DodoDada/Arte postale, dedicato alla mail art, con la precisa connotazione italiana (sappiamo benissimo tutti che nel web l’inglese è lingua franca) i tempi erano probabilmente maturi, dato che nel giro di pochi giorni tra inviti diretti e passaparola molti mailartisti s’iscrissero e iniziarono attivamente a partecipare alla vita di questo spazio a loro dedicato, memorabili discussioni e splendide opere lo dimostrano.
Allora come ora, l’intento di rendere sinergica la mail art, prima rete mondiale nata più di cinquanta anni fa e il web rete che ci ha traghettati nel XXI secolo, pare ancora di più una scelta vincente, questo grazie allo spirito che alberga in tutti i networker di questa favolosa avventura che è l’arte postale.
Pensando a DodoDada...
Quando cerco di visualizzare il nostro social network, mi viene subito in mente l’immagine di una piazzetta italiana. Animata e colorata, forse con un po’ di fracasso, dato dalle persone che incontrandosi, si salutano, ridono, discutono. Magari si siedono fuori al bar per vedere il passeggio e fare i commenti (all’italiana) sugli avvenimenti di attualità: politica, calcio... Pettegolezzi... Poi si gioca a biliardo, a briscola... Ma fanno anche discorsi seri e poi, quando incontri un amico che ti chiede aiuto, tu parli con gli altri amici e cerchi di risolvere il problema assieme a loro... Insomma una famiglia allargata. Ho provato a visitare altre piazze, alcune molto grandi (metropolitane), ma li sono in troppi, il fracasso si trasfoma in confusione. In altre, più simili alla nostra, il clima è più rigido, freddo, forse dovuto al fatto che “su al nord” il sole lo vedono poco...
